Orthopedic Instruments Made to OEM Drawings

MedCNCParts, the medical division of DEK, machines drill guides, targeting arms, reamer and broach bodies, inserters, impactors, trials and handles to print. They sit in our wider family of components for surgical instrument manufacturers.

We do not sell catalog instruments to hospitals or distributors: every part starts from your drawing.

Instrument sets from pilot to repeat lots

We machine sets from first-article through pilot builds to repeat production, holding the interfaces that matter: guide bores, inserter threads, handle couplings. For the plates, clamps and guides of fixation systems, see our orthopedic fixation components.

How orthopedic instruments are machined

  • Materials

    Materials and hardness

Instrument steels are chosen for hardness, wear and corrosion behavior under repeated reprocessing; the grade and condition come from your drawing. 17-4PH (ASTM A564, ASTM F899) is aged to H900, H1025 or the condition drawn for guides, inserters, impactors, handles and trials; Ti-6Al-4V serves lightweight trials and handles; PEEK and PPSU suit repeated steam sterilization.

Instrument stainless steels are listed in ISO 7153-1. For sliding or threaded parts that gall, read Nitronic 60 vs 17-4PH for instruments.

  • Machining

    Milling, turning and EDM

5-axis milling cuts guide bodies, targeting arms and broach profiles in one or two setups, keeping hole patterns on one datum; see 5-axis machining of instrument bodies. Swiss turning and deep-hole drilling make straight cannulated shafts; wire EDM for fine slots and cutting teeth and sinker EDM cut hardened steel.

Sequence: rough machining, hardening or aging, then finish machining and cylindrical grinding of critical features. Read how surgical instruments are CNC machined.

  • Finishing

    Finishing and marking

Reusable instruments are cleaned and sterilized many times, so the finish is part of the specification. Passivation per ASTM A967 / A967M or ASTM A380, electropolishing per ASTM B912 and satin or bead-blast finishes keep surfaces cleanable; a mirror finish is agreed on a sample.

Laser depth marks and UDI marking cover depth scales, part numbers and direct UDI marking under 21 CFR 801.45, with UDI data from the OEM.

  • Inspection

    Inspection and records

Instrument programs run under ISO 13485 and ISO 9001 quality systems. First article inspection (FAI) checks the full drawing before production, with the FAI report on request; lots are traceable, with the Certificate of Conformance and material certificates on request.

Reprocessing instructions (ISO 17664-1) and cleaning and sterilization validation belong to the OEM; we support them with material and finish data for each lot. The OEM may call out ISO 13402 corrosion and autoclave tests.

MedCNCParts manufactures components to customer specifications; it does not design or market medical devices.

What are common orthopedic instruments?

From a supplier's point of view, drill guides, reamers, broaches, inserters, impactors, trials and handles are the instrument families most often machined for orthopedic OEMs.

Do you make complete instruments or components?

Both: machined components and complete single-piece machined instruments to your drawing. Assembly of multi-part instruments and sterile packaging are confirmed per program.

Which steels do you use for cutting instruments?

17-4PH, 420 and 440A per ASTM F899, heat-treated to the hardness on the drawing.

Can you laser-mark depth scales and UDI?

Yes. Depth scales, part numbers and UDI codes are laser-marked to your artwork; the UDI data comes from the OEM.

Do you produce instrument sets for new implant systems?

Yes, from first-article sets through pilot builds to repeat production of 1 to 10,000+ parts.
