Spinal Implant Manufacturing for OEMs

MedCNCParts, the medical division of DEK, machines interbody spinal cages and related spine components to the OEM's drawing, in PEEK and titanium. We machine implant components to OEM drawings as an additional capability alongside our diagnostic, instrument and equipment work. Cages belong to the implant components family.

Cages are made under an ISO 13485 quality system, with the FAI report, Certificate of Conformance and material certificates on request.

Spinal cages from pilot build to repeat lots

From samples and pilot builds to repeat volume, we also machine the instruments for cage systems (inserters, trials, handles) as orthopedic instrument components, plus pedicle screws for spinal systems and other bone screws.

Spinal cage designs we machine

TLIF (transforaminal)

/01
TLIF (transforaminal)
  • Features: curved or straight footprint, bulleted nose, serrated endplate teeth, inserter thread, graft window
  • Machining: teeth and graft window by 5-axis milling; inserter thread by turning and thread milling to fit the OEM's instruments

PLIF (posterior)

/02
PLIF (posterior)
  • Features: pairs of narrow cages, teeth, inserter interface, marker holes
  • Machining: teeth and marker holes milled in one or two setups, all referenced to the same datum

ALIF (anterior)

/03
ALIF (anterior)
  • Features: large footprint, lordotic angle, large graft windows, screw holes when the design is stand-alone
  • Material: stand-alone cage screws in Ti-6Al-4V ELI (ASTM F136), as the drawing specifies

Lateral (LLIF)

/04
Lateral (LLIF)
  • Features: long footprint, multiple graft windows, side inserter interface
  • Machining: fixtures that support lateral cages without distorting them

Cervical (ACDF)

/05
Cervical (ACDF)
  • Features: small footprint, thin walls, fine teeth, marker holes
  • Machining: sharp tools, light passes and controlled coolant in PEEK, so thin walls and teeth keep their shape

How spinal cages are machined

  • Materials
  • Machining
  • Finishing
  • Inspection
  • Materials

    Implant-grade materials

Cage bodies are machined from implant-grade PEEK (ASTM F2026), Ti-6Al-4V ELI (ASTM F136), which also serves for inserts and stand-alone cage screws, or CP titanium (ASTM F67) when specified. The OEM specifies the material on the drawing; material certificates are supplied on request.

Porous and 3D-printed titanium cages are an additive process that we do not run. For the trade-offs between the two main cage materials, read titanium vs PEEK.

  • Machining

    5-axis milling, turning

Teeth, graft windows, lordotic faces and marker holes are cut by 5-axis machining in one or two setups, all referenced to the same datum. Inserter threads and interfaces that fit the OEM's instruments are turned and thread milled.

In PEEK, sharp tools, light passes and controlled coolant keep thin walls and teeth in shape; fixtures support cervical and lateral cages without distortion. Tooth and window edges are deburred under magnification to the edge condition agreed on the first article.

  • Finishing

    Finishing and marking

Finishes follow the drawing's callout. Titanium parts are passivated per ASTM F86 or A967, or Type II anodized (AMS 2488) when the drawing calls for it. PEEK parts get dedicated handling and cleaning to keep the polymer free of metal particles and machining fluid residue.

Laser marking of lot and UDI data uses the content supplied by the OEM. Final cleaning validation, packaging and sterilization are the OEM's responsibility.

  • Inspection

    Inspection and records

A first article inspection against the full drawing precedes production, with the FAI report on request. Lots are traceable, with the Certificate of Conformance and material certificates on request.

Mechanical testing of interbody devices (ASTM F2077 static and dynamic tests, ASTM F2267 subsidence) and of pedicle screw constructs (ASTM F1717) is the OEM's design verification; we can machine the test samples from the production process.

Request A Quote

MedCNCParts manufactures components to customer specifications; it does not design or market medical devices.

What are spinal implants made of?

Mostly implant-grade PEEK (ASTM F2026) and titanium alloys (ASTM F136, F67), sometimes with tantalum markers. The OEM specifies the material on the drawing.

Do you machine PEEK spinal cages?

Yes, PEEK is in our material range.

Can you insert tantalum marker pins?

This is confirmed per program.

Can you machine features on 3D-printed titanium cages?

We do not print implants. Finish machining of printed cages supplied by the OEM is confirmed per program.

What documentation can ship with spinal cage lots?

On request, we supply the documents your program needs: a CoC, material certificates with lot traceability, an FAI report and critical-dimension inspection records. Parts are made under an ISO 13485-certified quality system.

What volumes do you support?

From first-article sets through pilot builds to repeat production lots of 10,000+ parts.
