Medical CNC Turning for Tight-Tolerance Parts

MedCNCParts provides medical CNC turning of round parts to your drawing: instrument shafts and handles, fittings, valve and pump components, housings and sensor bodies. For device OEMs and contract manufacturers, from samples to repeat lots.

Medical CNC Turning to Your Drawing

Introduction

MedCNCParts, the medical division of DEK, turns round parts to your drawing on CNC lathes and turn-mill centers, under an ISO 13485 quality system, from engineering samples to repeat lots.

This is the route for larger diameters and shorter parts; long, slender parts go to Swiss turning for slender parts. The OEM owns design validation, ISO 10993 biological evaluation, sterilization validation and regulatory clearance.

  • Round parts turned to your drawing

    Turning, Swiss or milling

Each process has limits, so the drawing decides the route. CNC turning and turn-mill suit larger diameters and short parts, with cross holes and flats by live tooling. Long, slender parts deflect away from the tool and go to Swiss-type turning.

Flats, pockets and multi-face features beyond live tooling go to CNC milling of prismatic parts. Shafts and pins whose diameter or roundness is tighter than turning holds are finished by cylindrical grinding of shafts and pins.

  • Capabilities Featured Image

    Operations and setups

Operations cover OD and ID turning, boring, grooving, thread turning, cross-drilling, milled flats with live tooling, and parting. Turn-mill centers add milled features in the same setup.

Size range, tolerances and surface finish are confirmed per drawing; surface roughness is specified as Ra per ISO 21920-2 or ASME B46.1.

  • Inspection Featured Image

    Concentricity and runout

Critical diameters are turned in one setup where possible and checked at first article; the FAI report is available on request.

Drawings are read to ASME Y14.5, and tolerance-critical features are agreed at DFM review rather than quoted as one shop-wide figure. For background, see our guide to medical CNC turning.

  • Finishing Featured Image

    Finishing per drawing

Turned parts are deburred and cleaned at edges, threads and cross holes, then finished as the drawing calls out: passivation per ASTM A967, electropolishing, or titanium anodizing (AMS 2488 Type II). UDI or lot marking is added where the drawing calls for it.

Every shipment carries lot traceability; CoC, material certificates and the FAI report are available on request.

MedCNCParts manufactures components to customer specifications; it does not design or market medical devices.

What is the CNC turning process?

The part rotates while a stationary tool removes material, producing round features such as diameters, bores and threads. Turn-mill centers add milled features in the same setup.

When is CNC turning not the right process?

Long, slender parts are better on Swiss-type lathes, and prismatic parts on milling centers. We choose the process per drawing.

What tolerances can you hold on turned medical parts?

It depends on diameter, length, material and feature, so we confirm it on your drawing at DFM review.

Do you turn titanium, stainless and PEEK?

Yes. 316L, 17-4PH, titanium and PEEK are in our material range, with material certificates on request and implant grades when the drawing calls for them.

Can turned parts ship passivated or anodized?

Yes. Finishes are applied per the drawing's callout, so parts ship passivated, electropolished or anodized to your specification.
