Component-Level Needle Manufacturing

MedCNCParts, the medical division of DEK, makes needle components to your drawing within our surgical and diagnostic components range; the finished needle, its assembly and sterilization stay with the OEM. For the full industry route, from tube drawing to packaging, see how hypodermic needles are made.

Made to your drawing

Hubs, stylets and cannulas are made to your drawing; none is a catalog part, and every lot is traced from tubing or bar to the shipped part.

From pilot build to repeat needle lots

Tell us your quantities, from samples and pilot build to annual repeat volume. Hubs and stylets are usually made complete by Swiss turning, and round stylet diameters can be finished by cylindrical grinding. Plastic hubs are machined for low volumes and engineering samples.

Needle components we produce

Cannulas cut to length

/01
Cannulas cut to length

Cannulas are cut to length from purchased needle tubing, with square or angled ends. Gauge and wall (regular, thin or extra-thin) follow your drawing, and overall length and cut-end condition are checked on each lot.

Ground bevels and points

/02
Ground bevels and points

Lancet, short-bevel and trocar points are ground to the primary and secondary angles on the drawing, in a fixture that holds the angle and the bevel orientation. Bevel length, point geometry and orientation are checked at first article and on each lot.

Side ports and notches

/03
Side ports and notches

Side ports and notches are cut in the cannula wall and deburred inside and out. Position, size and edge condition are checked, and burrs are inspected under magnification.

Stylets and obturators

/04
Stylets and obturators

Stylets and obturators are solid wires or rods with a ground tip matched to the cannula bevel. They are made in instrument stainless per ASTM F899, with grade and hardness per drawing.

Machined hubs

/05
Machined hubs

Hubs are machined in stainless steel, aluminum, polycarbonate or PEEK, including Luer features to ISO 80369-7 when specified. Bore, Luer geometry and concentricity to the cannula seat are checked against the drawing.

Needle manufacturing, step by step

  • Materials

    Tubing and materials

Cannula tubing meets ISO 9626, in austenitic stainless, commonly 304 or 316 grades, with gauge and wall per drawing. Stylets and obturators use instrument stainless per ASTM F899; metal hubs are 316L stainless steel or aluminum, and plastic hubs are polycarbonate or PEEK.

Material comes from the drawing, every lot is traced from tubing or bar to the shipped part, and material certificates are supplied on request.

  • Machining

    Cut, ground and deburred

Each route starts with an incoming check: the tubing or bar certificate is compared with the drawing and the lot is recorded. Tubes are cut to length with a controlled end condition and no closed lumen, then bevel and point geometry is ground in a fixture that holds the angle and the bevel orientation.

Side ports are then cut, and the inside and outside edges of ports, bevels and cut ends are deburred before cleaning to the OEM's specification.

  • Finishing

    Finishing and cleanliness

Stainless needle components are finished to the drawing. Passivation per ASTM A967 restores the passive layer after cutting and grinding; electropolishing per ASTM B912 also removes micro-burrs on edges and ports.

Bevels, ports and cut ends are inspected for burrs under magnification, and lumen and surfaces are cleaned to the OEM's specification. For the choice between the two finishes, see electropolishing vs passivation.

  • Inspection

    Inspection and records

Critical features are agreed at drawing review and checked at first article and on each lot: tube OD, ID, wall and straightness, length and cut-end condition, bevel angles and orientation, side ports, hub bore and Luer geometry, and surfaces. The FAI report, CoC and lot records are supplied on request.

Tests on the finished sterile needle (penetration force, sharpness, ISO 7864 compliance) and ISO 6009 hub color coding belong to the OEM.

MedCNCParts manufactures components to customer specifications; it does not design or market medical devices.

Which needle components can you make?

Machined hubs, stylets and obturators, and cannulas cut to length with ground bevels, side ports and deburred edges, all to your drawing.

Do you draw the tubing?

No. Needle tubing is purchased to ISO 9626 with certificates (supplied on request), then cut, ground and finished.

Can you grind custom bevel and point geometries?

Lancet, short-bevel and trocar points can be ground to the angles on your drawing, confirmed at drawing review and checked at first article.

Do you assemble needles to hubs in a cleanroom?

No. We supply needle components; hub bonding, assembly, sterilization and packaging stay with the OEM or its contract manufacturer.

What documentation do you provide?

On request, we supply the documents your program needs: a CoC, tubing and material certificates with lot traceability, an FAI report and inspection records for critical dimensions. Parts are made under an ISO 13485-certified quality system.
