Bone Screws Made to OEM Drawings

MedCNCParts, the medical division of DEK, machines bone screws for orthopedic, trauma, spine and dental device OEMs. We machine implant components to OEM drawings as an additional capability alongside our diagnostic, instrument and equipment work. For the engineering background, see our guide to bone screw types.

Made to your drawing

Every screw is made to print: there is no catalog and no stock size, only the geometry on your drawing.

Validation stays with the OEM Icon

Validation stays with the OEM

The OEM owns design validation, ISO 10993 biological evaluation, sterilization validation and regulatory clearance.

Documents on request Icon

Documents on request

Screws are inspected under an ISO 13485 quality system, with the FAI report, CoC and material certificates on request.

Bone screws from samples to repeat lots

Screws are also grouped with all medical fasteners, including device and instrument hardware. Spine programs often pair them with pedicle screws for spinal systems, and dental programs with prosthetic screws.

Bone screw types we machine

Cortical

/01
Cortical

Key features to control: a fine pitch, a full-length thread and the core diameter. Dimensional references such as ISO 5835 (hexagonal drive, spherical under-head, asymmetrical thread) apply when your drawing calls them out.

Cancellous

/02
Cancellous

Key features to control: a coarse pitch, a deep thread, and a partial thread with a smooth shank. ISO 9268 (conical under-head) applies when your drawing calls it out.

Locking

/03
Locking

Key feature to control: the threaded head, which must match the plate hole thread. Head geometry, including the locking-head thread, is checked at first article and on every lot.

Cannulated

/04
Cannulated

Key features to control: a central bore for a guide wire, with straightness and concentricity to the thread, checked at first article and on every lot. See cannulated screws.

Self-tapping

/05
Self-tapping

Key features to control: cutting flute geometry and burr-free cutting edges. Self-tapping flutes are milled, then deburred under magnification.

Headless compression

/06
Headless compression

Key features to control: two thread zones with different pitch, timed to each other. Thread profile, pitch and pitch diameter are checked at first article and on every lot.

How we manufacture bone screws

  • Materials
  • Machining
  • Finishing
  • Inspection
  • Materials

    Titanium and 316LVM

We machine the grade on your drawing and supply its mill certificate on request. Ti-6Al-4V ELI (ASTM F136 / ISO 5832-3) is the usual alloy for metallic bone screws; CP titanium (ASTM F67) has lower strength and is used where the OEM's design specifies it; 316LVM stainless (ASTM F138 / ISO 5832-1) is passivated after machining.

Specifications apply when the drawing calls for them; see titanium grades we machine.

  • Machining

    Swiss-type turning

Swiss-type turning of screw blanks supports the bar close to the cut in a guide bushing, which keeps long, slender screws straight from tip to head. Cannulation is gun drilled or deep-hole drilled with drift controlled over the bore length; see deep-hole drilling for cannulation.

Drive recesses (hex, hexalobular or cruciform) are broached or milled on the Swiss lathe, and screws are cleaned before finishing so no machining residue is trapped in threads or bores.

  • Finishing

    Finishing and marking

Finishes are applied per your drawing: Type II anodizing of titanium per AMS 2488, titanium color anodizing for size or length coding with the color code set by the OEM, passivation of 316LVM per ASTM A967 or ASTM F86 as called out, and electropolishing where the drawing requires it.

UDI laser marking applies lot, size or UDI data, for direct marking under 21 CFR 801.45 when the head offers room.

  • Inspection

    Inspection and records

Critical features are agreed at drawing review, then checked at first article and on every lot: thread profile, pitch and pitch diameter, major and minor diameter, drive recess dimensions and depth, cannulation, head geometry and burr-free threads and flutes. The FAI report is available on request.

Mechanical tests such as ASTM F543 (torsion, driving torque, pull-out) belong to the OEM's design verification; we supply parts from the production process for that testing.

Request A Quote

MedCNCParts manufactures components to customer specifications; it does not design or market medical devices.

Which bone screw types can you manufacture?

Cortical, cancellous, locking, cannulated, self-tapping and headless compression screws, all to your drawing.

What materials do you use for bone screws?

Ti-6Al-4V ELI (ASTM F136) and 316LVM stainless steel (ASTM F138), with lot traceability and mill certificates on request; CP titanium and other grades on request.

Do you thread-whirl bone threads?

Thread whirling on Swiss-type lathes is the usual method for long, fine bone threads with minimal burrs, and it is how we cut them.

Can you anodize and laser-mark screws?

Yes. Titanium screws can be Type II or color anodized and laser-marked with lot or UDI data, so they ship finished and marked to your specification.

What is the minimum order for custom bone screws?

There is no fixed minimum: programs run from engineering samples to repeat production lots of 10,000+ pieces.

Do you provide test data such as torque or pull-out?

Mechanical testing per ASTM F543 is part of the OEM's design verification. On request, we supply dimensional inspection data, FAI reports and material certificates, plus parts for your testing.
