Swiss Turned Medical Components, Machined Complete

MedCNCParts makes Swiss turned medical components to your drawing: instrument shafts, pins, cannulas, endoscope and fitting parts for device OEMs and contract manufacturers. Swiss-type lathes machine each slender part complete in one setup.

Swiss turned medical components to print

Introduction

MedCNCParts, the medical division of DEK, machines small, slender parts complete in one setup on Swiss-type lathes. Device OEMs and contract manufacturers get the same program, fixturing and inspection plan on every lot, from pilot lots to repeat production.

Parts large in diameter or short relative to their diameter belong on conventional CNC turning; features too fine for a standard setup are made as micro medical components.

  • Made to your drawing, complete in one setup
  • FAI against the full drawing, report on request
  • Lot traceability from bar to shipped part
  • Under an ISO 13485 quality system

    How Swiss turning works

On a conventional lathe the bar is clamped at one end, so a slender part bends as the tool cuts further from the chuck. On a Swiss-type lathe the sliding headstock feeds the bar past the tool, and a guide bushing supports it right next to the cut, whatever the part length.

Gang tooling and live tools turn, drill, mill flats and cross holes while the bar is held; the sub-spindle picks off the part and finishes its back end, so it comes off complete. Short, stiff parts can run in guideless mode.

  • Capabilities Featured Image

    Capability ranges

The bar diameter range sets the largest part that runs through the guide bushing; maximum part length decides whether a long shaft is made in one piece; typical tolerance by feature covers diameters, thread pitch diameter and runout.

Surface roughness (Ra) decides whether polishing is needed after turning; live tools, axes and sub-spindle decide which cross and back-end features are done complete. Our values are confirmed per drawing at DFM review.

  • Production Featured Image

    Cannulated screw bores

Bone-screw threads have a deep, asymmetric form, and cannulated screws add a long through-bore that must stay centered in the thread. The bore is drilled in stages, with chip evacuation planned for the material, and its position is checked at first article: drift is the main risk (see deep-hole drilling in medical stainless steel).

Mechanical testing of the screw design, for example per ASTM F543, belongs to the OEM.

  • Finishing Featured Image

    Finishing and inspection

Finishing is applied per the drawing's callout: passivation per ASTM A967, titanium color anodizing for size coding (or AMS 2488 Type II against galling), and laser marking of lot or UDI data.

First article inspection checks the full drawing before production, with optical measurement for thread forms and small diameters. Lots are traceable from bar to shipped part, with a CoC for each lot on request.

MedCNCParts manufactures components to customer specifications; it does not design or market medical devices.

When should a part be Swiss-turned instead of conventionally turned?

When it is small in diameter and long relative to its diameter, or needs many features in one setup. The guide bushing supports the bar next to the cut and limits deflection.

What diameters can you Swiss-turn?

Swiss-type lathes typically take bar up to about 0.79 to 1.26 in (20 to 32 mm) in diameter, depending on the machine. Our range depends on the machine and is confirmed per drawing.

Do you thread-whirl bone screws?

Thread whirling is used for bone-screw threads where the drawing and volume justify it. A ring of inserts rotating around the bar, close to the guide bushing, cuts the deep, asymmetric form in a single pass, with a cleaner flank and fewer burrs than single-point threading.

Which materials do you run on Swiss machines?

Titanium, 316LVM, 17-4PH and PEEK, with material certificates on request.

Is Swiss turning suitable for small lots?

Yes for engineering samples and pilot lots, though setup makes it most economical for repeat production. We quote from 1 piece.
