The functioning of a medical device begins with the material itself. In this article, we will discuss what is meant by medical grade titanium, its widespread use, and which grades are used for which purposes.
With respect to production, medical grade titanium does not refer to one particular substance. Medical grade titanium means a titanium alloy that meets specific medical requirements enabling its use in implants and surgical instruments.
It is considered ideal for use in the field of medicine due to its ability to operate successfully in the human body environment and the fact that it is non-magnetic. It has been selected for the reason that it develops a stable oxide layer on its surface.
Its combination of strength and low weight makes titanium perfect for medical tools, ensuring they can handle daily use without feeling too heavy. Plus, titanium can withstand frequent sterilization and exposure to harsh cleaning chemicals without any issues.
To ensure a high level of quality, strength, and safety, we make sure to comply with these two standards:
ASTM Standards: Specify characteristics and performance of medical titanium. Examples of standards are ASTM F67, ASTM F136, and ASTM F1472.
ISO Standards: Offer globally acknowledged requirements for medical titanium. Examples of standards are ISO 5832-2, ISO 5832-3, and ISO 5832-11.
Here is a comparison of CP titanium grades.
It is the softest and the most formable kind of commercially pure titanium. It consists of not less than 99.5% titanium and has a minimum tensile strength of 240 MPa. Due to its formability, it is used for fabrication of thin formable parts, such as parts for heat exchangers and surgical accessories.
We normally recommend Grade 2 for bone screws, orthopedic plates, dental implants, and surgical instruments or in situations where the component requires effective corrosion resistance but without the machining cost related to higher strength titanium grades.
Grade 3 CP titanium has a minimum tensile strength of 450 MPa. This indicates that it is capable of supporting heavier loads than Grade 2 titanium. It is utilized in the production of various medical implants and bone fixation devices.
In machining parts for load-bearing implants, Grade 4 provides considerably higher strength compared to the lower CP grades, with good corrosion resistance.
In medical product design, lowering weight is useful for improving performance and increasing comfort. Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) is what makes it possible to do that. With its density of 4.43 g/cm³, we can create durable components without making them unnecessarily heavy.
Titanium Grade 23, or Ti-6Al-4V ELI, is basically a purer version of Grade 5 titanium. It has stricter limits on oxygen content (keeping it at or below 0.13%) and also contains less nitrogen and carbon. Because of this, it offers better ductility, improved fracture toughness, higher fatigue strength, and greater biocompatibility, making it ideal for implants.
| Feature | Grades 1-2 | Grades 3-4 | Grade 5 | Grade 23 |
| Mechanical Strength | Low to Moderate | Moderate to High | Very High | Very High |
| Ductility and Fracture Toughness | Excellent | Good | Good | Excellent toughness |
| Biocompatibility | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent |
| Corrosion Resistance | Outstanding | Outstanding | Excellent | Excellent |
We work with titanium to create hips and knee implants, as well as plates, screws, and fixation devices. Titanium is ideal because it provides stable, precise fixation that lasts, even after long-term use.
We use titanium for dental implants, abutments, and prosthetic components due to its reliable fixation properties and biocompatibility with the tissues of the jaw.
We also make titanium spinal implants, including pedicle screws, rods, cages, and connectors. These components are designed to be fatigue-resistant and built to last.
In addition, we produce titanium cases and parts for pacemakers, ICDs, and other implantable medical devices that need to be both durable and resistant to corrosion.
We make patient-specific titanium plates and meshes capable of matching complex anatomical contours to help surgeons perform accurate reconstruction through proper fitting.
We fabricate surgical tools like forceps, needle holders, and retractors from titanium, as it is stable in size, does not stain easily, and is a pleasure to handle through lengthy surgical procedures.
We manufacture titanium components for prosthetic devices, braces, wheelchairs, and rehabilitation aids where light weight and durability are of equal importance as comfort.
We determine the titanium alloy grade based on the part’s functionality, service conditions, manufacturing process, and applicable regulations.
We begin by looking at the stress that the component will have to take. For low-stress components or parts that need substantial forming, we use Grade 1-3. For stronger components, we use either Grade 4, Grade 5, or Grade 23.
If we have implants that are intended to stay in the body for several years, we should be concerned about the material’s stability. We use Grade 23 for permanent implants due to its high fatigue and fracture performance, while Grade 4 is primarily used for dental implants and bone-contacting parts due to its excellent osseointegration properties.
Also, the method of manufacture will influence the choice of material. Grade 1 is the easiest to form, Grade 2 offers a balance between strength and formability, and Grades 5, and 23 is perfect for precisely machined parts that have to be strong.
We make sure the alloy conforms to the medical requirements in each case. ASTM F67 is for commercial grades 1 through 4, F136 for the implant grade 23, and F1472 for Grade 5 titanium alloys.
There is a balance between performance and cost. Grades 1-4 are usually the most cost-effective grades, while Grades 5 and 23 have extra costs that are justified by their superior performance and increased longevity.
We have discovered that there are a lot of manufacturing problems that get resolved even before machining happens. Choosing the right titanium alloy in advance will make it easier to control tolerance, perform surface treatment, and meet regulations during production.
